In a recent Freakonomics article called “Who Causes Cyclists’ Deaths” New York Times columnists break down the statistics of bicycle and motorcycle accidents. For those of us who represent injured riders we already knew that there is an assumption by the police and by the general public that it’s the rider’s fault. However, the Freakonomics article points out that an analysis of police reports on 2,752 bike-car accidents in Toronto found that the motorists was at fault 90 percent of the time. They also state that motorists cause roughly 75 percent of motorcycle-car crashes too.

So be careful out there. There is a significant chance that the motor vehicle drivers out there aren’t paying attention.
