The League of American Bicyclists has released its new list of bicycle friendly communities in time for the National Bike to Work Week. Durango, Breckenridge, Fort Collins and Steamboat Springs, Colorado have earned a gold status. Aspen and Gunnison received a silver status for the first time and Summit County received a bronze status. The status is based on each community’s degree of encouraging cycling, providing sound infrastructure, enacting pro-cycling legislature and supporting educational programs for cyclists. Colorado currently has sixteen bicycle friendly cities, according to the League of American Bicyclists. Durango was one of the league’s new additions, based on the city’s 300 miles of trails for mountain bikes and the addition of more bike lanes. Boulder has a platinum status, which is the league’s highest status. The league has currently named 214 bicycle friendly communities in 47 different states.
